SPRINGFIELD- Richard “Big Rick” Mengel, 74, of Nathaniel Street in the Pine Point section of Springfield passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, September 22, 2017 surrounded by his family after a 3 year battle with Lung cancer. Richard was born in Springfield on June 16, 1943 the son of the late Harold and Theresa (Terzi) Mengel. He was raised and educated in Springfield, attending local schools and graduated from Springfield Trade High School, Class of 1962. He married Elizabeth Duprey and they settled in Pine Point to raise their family. Richard was a member of Local #63 Sheet Metal Workers and worked for 35 years at Ludlow Technical Products before retiring. He was a communicant of St. Elizabeth Parish in Ludlow for many years. He enjoyed the outdoors, camping, fishing and hunting in Vermont with family. Richard enjoyed the simple pleasures in life especially spending time with family and friends. He leaves his beloved wife; Elizabeth (Duprey) Mengel. His children; Richard Mengel Jr. and his wife Edna, William M. Mengel, Joseph H. Mengel, James M. Cross and Lorraine Caplette and her husband James and a daughter in law, Amy Mengel. His twelve grandchildren; Krystal Cross, Christina Wilson, Carolyn, William and Matthew Caplette, Christopher Mengel, Craig Dyer, Gaston and Aleesha Mengel, Shakira Velez, Mehgan Seymour and Jay Cross. Five great grandchildren; Ava Parks, Leyla Caplette, Lindsey Cross, Noah Wilson and Aleksa Mengel. He also leaves two godchildren; Dawn Lind and Christopher Walsh. His sister in law and brother in law; Cherrlyn McFalls and her husband Clyde and Harry Davis Jr. and his wife Virginia and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Richard was predeceased by a son, Tom Cross and his grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Terzi. Calling hours will be held at the Ratell Funeral Home, 200 Main St., Indian Orchard on Thursday morning (9/28) from 9 to 11 A.M. There will be a Religious Service at the Funeral Home at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Norman Bolton, Celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Michaels Cemetery on State St. in Springfield. Donations in Richard’s memory may be made to Mercy Medical Cancer Center.
