Daniel E. Barszcz

CHICOPEE-Daniel E. Barszcz, "Dan" or "Dziadziu" as his family called him, 67, of Catherine Street in Chicopee passed away on Sunday morning at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield surrounded by his family. Dan was born in Ludlow on August 29, 1950 the son of the late Edward & Alfreda (Gawron) Barszcz. He was raised in Ludlow, attending local schools and graduated from Ludlow High School and Holyoke Community College.  Dan enlisted in the US Navy in 1971, serving as an Electricians Mate aboard the USS Holland, a Hunley Class Submarine. She was the first ever submarine built to service Fleet Ballistic Missile submarines. He proudly served for three years and was honorably discharged and returned home in 1973, settling in Chicopee. Dan worked as a welder for IBW or International Beam Welding in West Springfield.   Dan was an avid sports fan and followed the Red Sox and Patriots religiously. He loved the outdoors and was an avid golfer and even carded a Hole-in-One during his career. He loved his family, especially cherishing his time with granddaughters, Kara and Olivia who he visited every week without fail. Dan also enjoyed good times with his brothers; David & Robert, keeping that precious bond of family close to him. He also enjoyed listening to the Howie Carr show, especially Howie's unedited and outspoken opinions. He will be sadly missed by his daughter, Chrystal Dore and her husband Ed and their children, Kara and Olivia of Chicopee. His dear brothers; David Barszcz and his wife Nancy and Robert Barszcz and his wife Carol all of Belchertown, several nieces and nephews and his former wife, Carol (Avery) Barszcz.  Calling hours at the Ratell Funeral Home, 200 Main St., Indian Orchard will be Thursday evening from 4 to 7 p.m. Funeral Services for Dan will be Friday morning at the Ratell Funeral Home at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Matt Alcombright, Celebrant. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Aloysius Cemetery, 1273 Berkshire Ave., Indian Orchard.
