Gloria M. Shute

February 20, 1927 — March 24, 2016

Gloria M. Shute, 89, of Ludlow, passed away with her loving family by her side on Thursday, March 24, 2016. Born in Springfield on February 20, 1927 she was a daughter of the late George and Juliette (Bourgelas) Trombley.  Gloria was the quintessential 1950's homemaker residing in Granby for many years, lovingly raising four children; one daughter and three rambunctious sons, two of which were born thirteen months apart. She was a fantastic cook, an accomplished self- taught knitter, and domestic seamstress. She also gifted many intricate cross stitch samplers, linens, and numerous crafted Christmas keepsakes.  She was an avid reader and always enjoyed a good book. She enjoyed family vacations on Cape Cod, and spending time at the cottage at the lake where there was boating, skiing, cookouts, and many family gatherings. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, whether it was playing games, doing crafts and puzzles, or simply listening to them talk about what was going on in their lives. She was a strong woman who overcame challenges with much dignity. She was the thread that kept our family together and the person we all aspire to be like. Above all, she was a wonderful and inspiring woman who will be deeply missed by all who were lucky enough to have known and loved her.  Gloria was predeceased by her loving husband, Ben Shute, on September 20, 2006. Now reunited, having celebrated 59 remarkable years of marriage, together, they are probably enjoying a game of gin rummy or fox trotting to a Judy Garland song.   She leaves her three sons, Robert Shute and his wife Virginia, Marc Shute and his wife Frances, and Brian Shute; her daughter, Karen Jarvis and her husband Richard; her sister, Shirley Gentile and her husband John; her sister-in-law, Norma Shute; seven grandchildren, Ruth Poirier, Derek Shute, Ian Shute, Lindsey Pirog, Jason Shute, Daniel Jarvis, and Ashlie Shute; and seven great-grandchildren, Cameron, Leah, Aubrey, Nathan, Brian, Julia, and Mason. She also leaves many nieces, nephews, and friends.  Along with her husband, Gloria was predeceased by her brother, Raymond Tombley; her grandson, Toby Jarvis; and her daughter-in-law, Jayna Shute. A calling hour will be held on Monday, April 4, 2016 from 10-11am with a funeral home service at 11am at Ratell Funeral Home, 200 Main St, Indian Orchard. Burial will be private. Donations may be made in lieu of flowers to the charity of one's choice. For further information please visit ratellfuneralhome.com.
