Jean A Mathisen1935-2015Indian Orchard- Jean A. Mathisen, 80, a lifelong resident of Indian Orchard passed away peacefully on Monday, September 28, 2015 at Wingate of South Hadley. Jean was born in Springfield on April 6, 1935 to the late Fredrik and Beatrice (Brouillette) Mathisen. She was a graduate of Cathedral High School and worked until her retirement with the Springfield Steel Erectors company. Jean was an active communicant and volunteer of St Jude's parish in Springfield. She established the library at St. Matthew's School of Indian Orchard with great pride and purpose. Jean's lifelong love of people, books, and giving to others was also evident in her volunteer efforts with the Springfield Read Write Now literacy program as well as tutoring with the Gray House organization. Jean will be greatly missed by all. She leaves her brother, Larry Mathisen and his wife Claudette of Indian Orchard; her niece, Kerri Niemiec and her husband Tom of Chicopee; two nephews, Peter Mathisen and his wife Kim of Wilbraham and James Mathisen and his wife Becky of Ludlow. Jean also leaves her beloved great nieces Julia and Daniella Niemiec and great nephew Christopher Mathisen. Calling hours will be held on Monday, October 5, 2015 from 9-10am at Ratell Funeral Home, 200 Main, Indian Orchard followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial in Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, 417 Boston Road, Springfield at 11am. Rites of Committal will be held in St. Aloysius Cemetery, 1273 Berkshire Ave, Indian Orchard. Donations may be made in lieu of flowers to the Gray House organization of Springfield to continue her efforts in supporting others in need through education.
