Kapiel Atanian

Kapiel Atanian 1922 - 2009  Indian Orchard - Kapiel Atanian, 86, died on Wednesday July 1, 2009 at Mercy Medical Center.  A lifelong resident of Indian Orchard, he was born on December 10, 1922, a son of the late Nazaret and Isgoohi (Dardarian) Atanian.  He attended local schools and was a graduate of Springfield Trade High School.  He proudly served in the U.S. Army during WWII receiving the Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, and the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon.  He retired from American International College after many years of service in the maintenance department.  He was the husband of the late Bibi (Sigurdottr) Atanian who died on May 10, 2006.  He is survived by two sons, Heidi and his wife Bonita, and Michael, both of Springfield, and his daughter, Christine Champigny and her husband Donald of Chicopee.  He will be sadly missed by two grandchildren, Elisabeth Doyle and Matthew Atanian, several nieces and nephews, and lifelong friend Phil Girard of Springfield.  He was predeceased by his brother, Anthony Atanian.   The funeral procession will form on Wednesday, July 8 at 9am at the Ratell Funeral Home, 200 Main St. in Indian Orchard with a Service of Remembrance at 10am at the funeral home.  Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery, Bay St. in Springfield.  Calling hours at the funeral home are on Tuesday, July 7 from 4 - 7pm.  In lieu of flowers contributions in Kapiel's memory may be directed to the Western MA Council, Boy Scouts of America, 249 Exchange St., Chicopee, MA 01013.
