HOLYOKE - Marguerite Marie (Mercure) Cartmill, 86, of Chicopee, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, March 20, 2011 surrounded by her loving family. Born in Holyoke and a resident of Springfield and Chicopee, she was the daughter of the late Alfred and Exeilia (Charpentier) Mercure. Marguerite was a hairdresser and had also worked at the former Two Guys and Topps department stores. She also worked for several years for the Springfield School Department as a crossing guard. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, her life was centered on her family. She was undoubtedly the glue that bound the family together. She was the family taxi driver and babysitter whose countless selfless acts will always be cherished and remembered. She was a woman who loved music and expressed that love by her participation in church and in the choirs at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart and St. Rose de Lima parishes. Flowers were also of special importance with the rose and calla lily her favorites. Besides her parents, Marguerite was predeceased by her husband, Dixon J. Cartmill, by her brother, William Mercure, a sister, Jean Cloutier and by her daughter-in-law, Gail Cartmill. She leaves to cherish her memory her sister, Lillian Cardinal of Chicopee; her children, Deborah Roberge and her partner, Tony Urbanowski of Chicopee, Sandra Long and her husband, Bryan of Springfield, Douglas Cartmill and his partner, Sue Burns of Enfield, CT, Carole Swann and her husband Terry of Springfield; (7) grandchildren, Andrea Miller and her husband, Derek, Jennifer Long, Heather Ware, Damon Cartmill, Jill-Marie Garcia and her husband Rene, Sean O'Connor and his wife Hallie and Cody O'Connor; (10) great grandchildren, Hannah, Rachel, Derek, Jr., Alyssa, Tyler, Haiden, Samantha, Justin, Leia and Donald. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 24, 2011 from the Ratell Funeral Home 200 Main St., Indian Orchard at 8:15 a.m., followed by the Liturgy of Christian Burial in St. Rose de Lima Church, Grattan St., Aldenville, at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery, South Hadley.
