Mitchell E. Smith

January 10, 1931 — May 7, 2021

Mitchell E. Smith, 90 of Springfield or Smitty as his family and friends called him, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, May 7, 2021. He was born on January 10, 1931 to Clyde and Winnie (Neal) Smith in Washington County, Virginia. Mitchell served in the US Air Force as a Master Sergeant for 22 years. He was awarded numerous commendations and citations including the Bronze Star for his services in Vietnam. Mitch was honorably discharged and returned home, settling in Springfield to raise his family. Mitch worked at Dielectrics Inc. in Chicopee, MA for 6 years before finally retiring. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Mitchell enjoyed his time fishing, cooking, going to the casino and spending time with the family. He married Gladys (Watson) on July 19, 1950 and they spent 48 loving years together before her passing on November 4, 1998. Mitchell was also predeceased by; two sons William C. Smith and James F. Smith Sr.; his brothers, James W. Smith and Franklin C. Smith; his sisters, Annie V. South and Luise Smith; and four grandchildren Brett Boucher, Robert Boucher, Kelsea Owens and Seth Owens. Mitchell is survived by two sons, Garland L. Smith of Springfield, MA and Ronnie E. Smith of Elk, WA; three daughters, Linda D. Keller, Pamela M. Boissonneault and Stephanie L. Owens all of Springfield, MA; eight grandchildren, Heather Boissonneault, William Boissonneault, Joseph Smith, William Smith, Rebecca Smith, James Smith Jr., Shelly Smith and Carleen Twining; and five great-grandchildren, Noah, Alex, Christen, Gabriella Smith and Kaleb Ryan Owens.



Family and Friends will gather to remember Smitty on Wednesday, May 12, 2021 at Ratell Funeral Home, 200 Main St., Indian Orchard from 9:00 to 11:15 a.m. with a service at the Funeral Home beginning promptly at 11:30 a.m. Burial with military honors will follow in Hillcrest Park Cemetery, Parker St., Spfld.
