Peter J. Doherty1963-2016Springfield- Peter J. Doherty passed away tragically on the morning of April 5th. Peter was a very loving and proud father who cared deeply for his family and friends. Peter grew up in Indian Orchard graduating from Putnam high school in 1982, with a scholarship to play soccer at West Point, but rejected the offer to raise his first born daughter. He later was a home health aide for a family that adored him and also worked for the city of Springfield for many years before retiring. Peter was a remarkable charismatic man who left an imprint on all those who crossed his path. His love to tell a good story or joke just to see a smile on someone's face was uncanny. His greatest joy was spending time with his two daughters and two granddaughters. Peter had a love for many things, but his favorite of all was to bring people together and make them laugh. He will forever be missed and never be forgotten. His favorite saying to his children was "love, love, why say it twice?...because once is not enough!" Peter was predeceased by his mother, Adrain McCloskey and brother, John L. Doherty. He leaves behind to cherish his memory his two daughters, Shannon (Doherty) Goncalves and husband Manuel and Megan Doherty. He smiled daily thinking of his grandbabies, as he would call them, Adrain Goncalves and Sidney Goncalves. He leaves his sister, Michell Manzi and her husband Franco; nephew, Adam; and two nieces, Jillian and Makenna. All funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations be made to Ratell Funeral Home, 200 Main St, Indian Orchard, MA 01151 to help contribute to the services. Ratell Funeral Home(413) 543-3836
