William James Galway, Sr.

William J. Galway, Sr. 1927-2009   William James Galway, Sr., 81, of Indian Orchard, passed away on Thursday, June 4, 2009 in the Heritage Hall West Nursing Home, Agawam.  Born in Gloversville, NY, and a resident of Springfield for over (50) years, he was the son of the late John and Bertha (Kreitlow) Galway.  William was the retired owner and proprietor of the former Apremont Auto Service and ARCO Station which was located on Pearl Street in Springfield. He was an accomplished bowler and golfer and won many trophies over the years. William was a Navy veteran of World War II. A Seaman Second Class he and was awarded the American Theatre Medal, the Victory Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Medal with (1) Star and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon.  He leaves his wife of (65) years, Gertrude (Long) Galway, his children, Gloria Mason of Wales, Janet Boles of Amsterdam, NY, Linda Stenberg of Springfield, Donna Allen of Chicopee, William J. Galway, Jr., of Indian Orchard, Judy Gagne of Clearwater, FL and Rick Galway of Amsterdam, NY; his sister, Ada Hogaboon of Johnstown, NY; (16) grandchildren, (16) great grandchildren and (9) great great grandchildren.  A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at the Ratell Funeral Home 200 Main St., Indian Orchard at 2 p.m. A calling hour will be held prior to the service beginning at 1 p.m.  Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.  In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Baystate VNA & Hospice c/o Baystate Health Foundation 280 Chestnut St., Springfield, MA  01104 or to Heritage Hall West Activities Fund 61 Cooper St., Agawam, MA  01001.
