RUSSELL-Barbara Ann (Ferst) Walsh, 73, of Dickinson Hill Road in Russell passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 5, 2019 surrounded by her family. Barbara was born in Springfield on July 27, 1945, a daughter of the late Henry and Marion (Herbert) Ferst. Barbara was raised and educated in Springfield, attended local schools and graduated from Commerce High School. Barbara worked for the City of Springfield in the Collectors office briefly. She married her beloved husband, John R. Walsh in St. Matthew Church in Indian Orchard and she devoted her time to raising her family. Barbara loved to crochet in her spare time and made hundreds of handmade blankets for family and friends and also for many newborn children at Wesson Women’s Hospital in Springfield. Barbara worked as a secretary in the Labor & Delivery department at BSMC/Wesson Women’s Hospital for over 40 years before her retirement. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially at their summer home in Wales, where she also enjoyed boating on the lake. Barbara and John enjoyed traveling, especially cruises to the Caribbean. The entire family traveled to Ireland in 2018, exploring the Walsh family heritage. She leaves her beloved husband of 54 years, John R. Walsh. Her children; Timothy Walsh and his wife Joyce of Springfield and Maureen Fregeau and her husband Thomas of Chicopee and her two cherished grandchildren; John and Nicole Fregeau. She also leaves her sister in law; Catherine Sampson of Ashford, CT., three nieces; Mary, Kate and Teresa and her beloved companions; Masie & Ruby. Her brother, David Ferst passed away in 1987. Calling hours will be on Thursday, May 9, 2019 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Ratell Funeral Home, 200 Main St., Indian Orchard. The family invites you to join them directly at St. Rose de Lima Church, 600 Grattan St, in Aldenville on Friday, May 10, 2019 at 10:00 A.M. to celebrate the Liturgy of Christian burial for Barbara.
