Doris (Meagher) Chasse passed away Saturday, June 19 at home in Ludlow. Doris was born January 1, 1926 in New Brunswick, NJ daughter of Edward A. & Helen Morris Meagher & sister to Helene, Edward & Robert Meagher all previously deceased. Always a lover of sports & the outdoors, Doris spent her early years enjoying summers with her family at the "Jersey Shore" & at Girl Scout Camp Chickagami where she later acted as Waterfront Director & gained her nickname of "Splash"! Doris earned her Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education at Trenton State Teacher's College and a Master's Degree from Columbia University. Moving to New England in 1952, Doris began her teaching career at Van Sickle in Springfield.
While recuperating from a skiing injury she met Bert Chasse, the love of her life, and they soon married on June 22, 1957. Their journey of 54 years together started out with skiing, swimming, boating & spending time with nieces & nephews and then their own two children at cabins in Stratton, VT and Becket,MA. In 1972-3 Doris & Bert began "trailering", venturing cross-country to volunteer at St. Stephen's Mission School on the Wind River Indian Reservation in Wyoming. In addition to camping & traveling extensively in the US & Canada, they took trips to France, Spain and finally Doris' ancestral homeland of Ireland!
Doris also enjoyed cooking, photography, swimming, sewing, reading murder mysteries, and of course keeping up on the Red Sox & Patriots. Through the years Doris’s faith played an integral role in her life. A daily communicant of Christ the King Church, she was dedicated to the Adoration Chapel as well as numerous Pro-Life causes. Doris lived in Longmeadow, Monson, Chicopee and finally Ludlow.
Devoted to her family, Doris is survived by her children Joseph E. & Laurie Chasse of Monson and John & Christine Chasse Allen of Berwick, PA; grandchildren Thomas, Becky, Katelyn, Gregory, John, Gabrielle, Benjamin, Sarah and Cory; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. After losing Bert in 2011 she was blessed with the joyful arrival of 4 great-grandchildren whom she simply adored: Leo, Hunter, Mackenzie, & Rosalie. At the time of her passing, Doris was cared for by her dear friend Ashley, many compassionate caregivers and Trinity Hospice nurses.
Funeral services will be Saturday July 10, 2021. Friends & family may call from 8:30-9:30 AM at the Ratell Funeral Home 200 Main St. Indian Orchard. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. at Christ the King Church 44 Warsaw Ave Ludlow. Burial will follow in St. Michael's Cemetery, St. Philips section.
