SPRINGFIELD - Frank S. Henry Sr., 92, of Worcester St. in the Indian Orchard section of Springfield passed away peacefully on Sunday Morning, June 16, 2019 at his home with his family surrounding him. Frank or “Bo Henry” as he was known as in his younger years (a name pinned on him by his baseball teammates) was born in the Orchard and was a lifelong resident. He was educated in Springfield schools and graduated from Technical High School in Springfield. Frank enlisted in the US Navy in January of 1945 and served as a Fireman first Class aboard the USS Gazelle, a refueling ship and later aboard the Destroyer. USS Strong. Frank received the World War II Victory medal, the American theatre Medal and the Asiatic-Pacific theatre Medal. He was honorably discharged and returned home in 1946. Frank met Marie H. Hitt and they were married, settling in the Orchard to raise their family of six children. He began a long career with Monsanto Chemical in Springfield, working over 30 years as a Lab technician before retiring. Frank was an outstanding baseball player in his youth, and was well known as a great pitcher in High School which got him an invitation to try out for the Pittsburgh Pirates before joining the Navy in the war effort. He played softball for many years and later turned to umpiring. He was a lifelong member of the Moose Family Center 1849 in Chicopee, helping build the Lodge that stands today. He also enjoyed Bowling with his late wife and even took up golfing. A native New Englander, he loved the home teams, especially the Red Sox, his boyhood dreams were fulfilled in 2004 with the World Series win. Franks beloved wife, Marie H. (Hitt) Henry passed away on May 18, 2007 as well as his siblings; Edward and Richard Henry, Charlotte Kelly and Ruth Thrasher. He leaves his children; Sandi Kennedy of Grand Forks, ND, Steve Roberts of Port Charlotte, FL., Frank Henry Jr. of Indian Orchard, Linda Piubeni and her husband Steven of Clermont, FL., Todd Henry and his wife Diane of Indian Orchard and Denise Heffernan and her husband Timothy of East Spfld. He also leaves to cherish his memories ten grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren and his siblings; William Henry and Barbara Lindsey of MA. and Norman Henry of FL. and many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 20, 2019 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Ratell Funeral Home, 200 Main St., Indian Orchard. Funeral services for Frank will be Friday morning, June 21. 2019 at the Ratell Funeral Home at 11:00 a.m. with a Religious service followed by burial with Military honors at Hillcrest Park Cemetery, 895 Parker St., Spfld.
