SPRINGFIELD -Margaret A. (Symington) Cole, 81, or Peggy as her family and friends affectionately called her, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Wednesday morning at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. Peggy was born in West Springfield on December 13 1936, the daughter of the late Ernest M. and Jean (Toland) Symington. She attended West Springfield High School where she made many lifelong friends, was a member of the Drama and Glee Club, and played basketball for the Terriers. Peggy married Roger Cole, and together they raised three children in Indian Orchard. She was an excellent seamstress, Cub Scout Leader, camping enthusiast, and was much appreciated for her delicious holiday cookies and pies. Outside the home, she worked for many retailers in sales and customer service. Peggy was a longtime member of the Episcopal Church and was a communicant of The Good Shepard, Saint Aidan’s, Saint Luke’s, and most recently the Christ Church Cathedral in Springfield. She was a volunteer for many community programs including Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Meals on Wheels, Indian Orchard Public Library, and Indian Orchard Elementary School. Peggy was a world traveler, having visited Hawaii, Paris, Italy, Aruba, and in the winter, Florida. She was an avid reader and a member of the Springfield YMCA and Learning in Later Life. Her beloved husband of 36 years, Roger R. Cole, passed away in 1992, and her daughter, Sharon A. Cole, also predeceased her. Peggy leaves her daughter Susan E. Cole, her husband, Jerry D. Marx of Portland, ME and their children, Andy Cole of Portland, ME and Becca Cole of Durham, NH; her son Steven R. Cole of Belchertown and his partner Mary Jane Liebro; her son in law, Robert Hebert of Scituate MA and Boca Raton, FL; Nathaniel and Angelica Desroches and their son Barrett of Greenfield, MA; her brother Ralph E. Symington and his wife Linda of Groveland, MA; her sister Jean Caron and her husband David of West Springfield, MA.; her brother in law, Merton Cole and his wife Norma of West Springfield; as well as many nieces and nephews. Calling hours at the Ratell Funeral Home, 200 Main St., Indian Orchard, will be Sunday afternoon, March 4, 2018 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. The family invites you to join them at Christ Church Cathedral, 35 Chestnut St, Springfield, MA. on Monday, March 5, 2018 at 10:00 A.M.  to Celebrate the Funeral Liturgy for Peggy with The Very Reverend Tom Callard, Celebrant. Rites of Committal with Final Commendation will follow in Hillcrest Park Cemetery, Parker St., Spfld, MA.  Donations in Peggy’s memory can be made to the Springfield Public Library, c/o Indian Orchard branch, 44 Oak St., I.O.
