LAKEWOOD, WA - Roland A. Blais, 82 of Lakewood, Washington passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, May 20, 2021 after a battle with cancer. He was born in Springfield on September 30, 1938, a son of the late Arthur and Irene (Fontaine) Blais. He grew up in Indian Orchard and attended local schools, graduating from Springfield Trade High School in 1957. He enlisted in the US Army, serving two tours in Vietnam, beginning in 1965 with the 1ST Air Cavalry and from 1967 to 1968 with the 4th Infantry Division. He also served in Korea where he met his future wife, Kyong Shim, they were married and returned to the United States. Roland proudly served his country for 22 years.
After returning home, Roland and Kyong settled in Lakewood, WA to raise their family. He worked for the United States Postal Service for 13 years before retiring. Roland enjoyed working out and trips to the gym. Roland and Kyong loved to travel and listening to the music of Frank Sinatra. A football aficionado, he was an avid fan of the NY Giants and Notre Dame Football. Roland was a loving husband, father and grandfather and enjoyed a wonderful life with his family.
He leaves his beloved wife of 40 years, Kyong Shim Blais, his loving daughters; Irene Blais of Lakewood and Rita Blais and her husband Will of New York City. His two cherished grandchildren; Ian and Isabella. He is also survived by his siblings; Lucille Fontaine of Ludlow, Rita Nowak of Chicopee and Gerard Blais of Indian Orchard and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Roland was predeceased by his sister, Doris Snyder and sister-in-law, Mary (Gethins) Blais.
Private services were held on June 8, 2021 and Roland was interred with military honors at Tacoma National Cemetery in Washington.
