Thomas J Fortier Jr.

September 10, 1966 ~ February 13, 2022 (age 55)

Thomas J. Fortier, Jr. passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones on Sunday, February 13th after a 6 1/2 year battle with cancer. Thanks to the incredible care of his oncologists at Baystate Medical Center's D ‘Amour Center for Cancer Care and The Dana Farber Cancer. Institute in Boston, Tom was able to live a good quality of life beyond initial expectations. Many family members and friends were able to visit on Saturday to provide Tom and his family with loving support.  Tom was the son of the late Shirley (Orlick) and Thomas J. Fortier Sr. He was born on September 10th, 1966 in Fort Knox, Kentucky where his father was serving in the military.  He lived in Springfield most of his life.  After graduating from Cathedral High School in 1984, he attended Holyoke Community College, graduating with a degree in music with an emphasis on jazz. Prior to his retirement in 2016, Tom was the owner of Freedom Snacks LLC, a distributor of snack food to local super-markets.  Music was Tom's lifelong "hobby". He played several instruments (guitar, piano and drums) and when younger, played in local bands. His musical tastes were eclectic and some of his favorite musicians/bands were Pat Metheny, Al DiMeola, Chick Corea, Bill Frisell and Michel Camilo as well as The Beatles, Beethoven and Debussy. He devoted his time to creating, practicing and recording music, especially when he began teaching his children to play piano and appreciate music, a legacy to last their lifetime. He expanded their musical education by enrolling them in the Community Music School in Springfield. Tom was a huge fan of New England sports teams, especially the Red Sox. Tom, his son and father attended many games at Fenway, especially when TJ started to play baseball. In the summer of 2017, the three generations attended a special event at Fenway where Vietnam veterans like his grandfather were honored on the field prior to the game in a ceremony with full military honors. It was a moving tribute that will remain a treasured memory. Tom was a real family man. He was especially proud of his beautifully maintained backyard that he was always improving. Tom and his wife Ania were very welcoming hosts for many holidays and special events through the years, most recently a family reunion in June. Tom is survived by his beloved family; his wife Ania (Gorczynska), whom he married on September 7th, 2007, and his children whose accomplishments made him so proud - son Thomas (TJ) and daughter Sophia. He also leaves a brother Robert and his family in Belchertown, an aunt Barbara (Orlick) Santos and her family in Arizona and his uncle John (Jack) Orlick and his family in Pennsylvania. He also leaves a close extended family of second cousins as well as Ania's family in Poland.
